Intussusception

Intussusception is a very serious medical condition in which part of the intestine folds into another part of the intestine. This condition often forms an obstruction, blocking food and fluid from passing through intestine. Intussusception also cuts off the blood supply to the part of the intestine that’s affected. Intussusception can lead to a tear in the bowel, infection and death of bowel tissue.

In children younger than 3, intussusception is one of the main causes of intestinal obstruction, which is found to be often rare in adults. Most cases of adult intussusception are the result of an underlying medical condition, such as a tumor, in which surgery is required to correct the problem.

Symptoms of Intussusception

Because intussusception is considered rare in adults and the symptoms of the disorder are often nonspecific, its diagnosis becomes a challenge. Abdominal pain is the most common symptom, followed by nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Most people might not have any signs or symptoms.
